Remember reciting the nursery rhyme Little Miss Muffet? Unlike the cheese variety of curds Miss Muffet enjoyed sitting on her tuffet, fruit curds are not cheese. First enjoyed in late 19th century England, fruit curds are the fanciest category of fruit spreads and toppings. They are traditionally served with bread and scones at afternoon tea as an alternative to jam, and as a filling for cakes, pastries and tarts. Fruit curds differ from traditional jams, pie fillings or custards in that they contain a higher proportion of juice, less sugar, and are made with butter and eggs resulting in a smooth and creamy texture.
Spread on toast and crepes. Spoon atop ice cream and yogurt. Use it in countless dessert recipes or simply stop and savor it with a scone and tea.
